Traffic Signage, Structural Installations & Tunnel Fit-Out

Ascent was engaged by the UGL/CPB Joint Venture to support the mechanical installation scope for the M6 Stage 1, a major infrastructure project forming part of Sydney’s expanding motorway network. This $3 billion development includes a 4 km twin tunnel connecting the M8 at Arncliffe to President Avenue in Kogarah, designed to ease congestion and streamline traffic flow in the city’s south.

Our role involved the complete mechanical fit-out and installation of key structural elements within the tunnel roof. This included traffic management signage (TMS), ISLA speaker signs, HTK signs, speakers, and custom brackets. Operating primarily from elevated work platforms (EWPs) and scissor lifts, our experienced teams delivered a seamless installation across both the southbound and westbound tunnels.

Precision and alignment were critical to the success of the project. Every component was installed to meet the client’s exact specifications, ensuring safety, performance, and long-term durability. Ascent’s structured and consistent delivery on site contributed to the broader program objectives and demonstrated our capability to perform in complex, high-risk tunnel environments.

Our challenges

Wins

Successfully delivered high-quality signage and structural installations within complex and confined tunnel environments. Despite the demanding conditions, all work was executed with precision, ensuring durability, compliance, and alignment with the project’s overarching engineering standards.

Maintained the momentum of the program by meeting tight, forecasted timelines without compromising safety or quality. This was achieved through the deployment of skilled mechanical installation teams, each bringing extensive experience and proven capabilities in tunnel infrastructure projects.

Challenges

Operating within restricted tunnel zones required careful management of overlapping schedules and multiple work crews. The confined environment increased the risk of congestion, demanding heightened awareness, safety measures, and real-time communication. Seamless coordination with other trades was essential to avoid delays and conflicts, especially given the dynamic nature of programming changes across different construction phases.

Installation tasks were further complicated by the need to work across tunnel sections with differing heights, limited access points, and a wide range of specialised equipment. These constraints called for tailored solutions, adaptive planning, and precise execution to ensure all installations met both safety and functional requirements despite the spatial limitations.
